The goal of AAC Camp is to:

  • provide an opportunity for children who use AAC to have a summer camp experience while communicating with other children who use AAC;

  • educate families and communication partners about methods and strategies to increase communication using AAC;

  • provide hands-on experience for graduate students and other professionals to gain confidence and hands-on experience with using and implementing strategies for AAC;

Our Story

AAC Camp: Advancing Adventures in Communicating Camp has grown over the years.  We started with 12 campers in 2006 and have increased attendance to 30/28 campers coming from 7 states and Canada.  AAC Camp is a collaborative effort between Idaho Assistive Technology Project (IATP), Idaho State University (ISU), and St. Luke's Children Rehab (initially St. Luke's Elks).  IATP has provided monetary support, staff for the running of a computer lab, equipment loan, and course credit for teachers and paraprofessionals.  ISU provides the coordination of students, professionals and clinical supervision; providing an opportunity for hands-on learning and clinical clock hours in AAC.  St. Luke's Children's Rehab provides administration, staff for activities and care of campers, materials, fund-raising, marketing, coordination of campers and families before and during camp.  In 2020-2021, AAC Camp was offered virtually.  AAC Camp has faciliated the start of an AAC Camp with the University of Alberta that occurs yearly in Canada.
